This book contains the instructions for mindfulness-of-breathing meditation,four-elements meditation, and the subsequent detailed discernment of materiality.
The Meditation on the Four Elements is one of the 40 subjects of concentration taught by the Buddha. It is a very important part of the foundation for vipassana practice. In a meditation retreat in 2008, Sayalay Dipankara explained that when this meditation subject is practiced successfully, one will discern and penetrate into ultimate materiality clearly. This can lead to the realization of its 3 characteristics. Such profound knowledge is crucial for Right Understanding and the attainment of the Final Liberation.
This talk helps us understand:
1、the common misunderstanding made by meditators when practicing Mindfulness of the In-and-Out-Breath (?nāpānasati) when they use the Wind Element as the subject.
2、how to reduce bodily discomfort by balancing the Elements.
3、specific instructions on the practice of the Four Elements based on their 12 characteristics.
4、how to practice towards the attainment of ‘the neighbourhood of Jhāna (upacārasamādhi).
5、how to use the Four Elements to discern the fine particles that constitute al lof materiality (rupa-kalāpa) using the concentration from Four-Elements Meditation to systematically discern ultimate reality in Insight Meditation (Vipassana).
6、the healing power of the Four Elements, and how to use it to heal oneself and others.
7、Finally, she explained how the Four-Elements Meditation is the basis for the practice ofpsychic power, which is useful for cultivating higher Wisdom. She urged everyone to practice diligently until full liberation so that such profound Dhamma could benefit many more.
